Terra Heights was designed and built for a young family seeking to create a residence that would serve as a long-term, multi-generational family property in a historic urban neighborhood. With sustainability and durability as the core criteria, the owner chose rammed earth as the construction method.
Located in the ‘The Heights’, Terra Heights needed to emulate the Prairie Style that characterizes this historically designated neighborhood. One of the defining characteristics of Prairie Style architecture is the preeminence of the horizontal rather than the vertical. The lifts of earth that create horizontal striations on the Terra Heights facade carry the spirit of prairie design while tightly anchoring the structure to this sloping lot.
